Reno Native’s YA Fiction Debut Is Heartbreaking Foster Care Story of Trauma and Healing
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
ST. PAUL, MN, February 14, 2019 – Flux, an imprint of North Star Editions, Inc. (NSE) is excited to announce the March 5, 2019 release of The Quiet You Carry by debut author Nikki Barthelmess. The Quiet You Carry is a young adult contemporary novel about a seventeen-year-old girl determined to graduate high school on time after she is abruptly placed into foster care due to the questionable relationship she has with her father.
Barthelmess’s debut is an #ownvoices novel as Barthelmess grew up in the Nevada foster care system, and is a graduate of the University of Nevada: Reno. Her work is fiction, but many of the difficult themes explored in the book are partially inspired by circumstances she has experienced or seen in the lives of others growing up in foster care.
Barthelmess is available for interviews and additional book signings and talks. Additional review copies of The Quiet You Carry are available by request.
More about The Quiet You Carry:
Victoria Parker knew her dad’s behavior toward her was a little unusual, but she convinced herself everything was fine—until she found herself locked out of the house at 3:00 a.m., surrounded by flashing police lights.
Now, dumped into a crowded, chaotic foster home, Victoria has to tiptoe around her domineering foster mother, get through senior year at a new school, and somehow salvage her college dreams … all while keeping her past hidden.
But some secrets won’t stay buried—especially when unwanted memories make Victoria freeze up at random moments and nightmares disrupt her sleep. Even worse, she can’t stop worrying about her stepsister Sarah, left behind with her father. All she wants is to move forward, but how do you focus on the future when the past won’t leave you alone?

“As beautiful as it is heartbreaking, The Quiet You Carry isn’t just about the secret pain we hold inside, but the redemptive power of letting it go.” —Eric Smith, author of The Girl & the Grove
