North Star Editions is looking for an Editorial Intern to assist our staff of print and online publishing professionals working on children’s nonfiction titles over the summer. This is a part-time, temporary contract position that would last about 10 weeks during the summer of 2024.

NSE is offering this internship in partnership with We Need Diverse Books. The WNDB Internship Grant Program awards supplemental grants to applicants from diverse backgrounds to help further their goals of pursuing a career in children’s and adult publishing. NSE will only be considering candidates who qualify for the WNDB Internship Grant Program, and the selected candidate will be strongly encouraged to apply for the WNDB grant.

NSE publishes fiction and nonfiction content for the trade and educational markets in a variety of media. Under the leadership of our Associate Managing Editor, our Editorial Intern will assist in producing books for our juvenile nonfiction imprints.

Duties will include:

–Photo research and caption writing
–Index creation
–Copyediting, proofreading, and fact-checking
–Participating in weekly production meetings
–Administrative duties as assigned

The ideal candidate has the following qualifications:

–College student working toward a BA in English, Communications, or other relevant field, or a recent graduate, interested in a career in publishing
–Relevant course work in English and/or experience working as a writing tutor
–Avid reader, with an interest in publishing and books
–Strong computer skills, including familiarity with Google Workspace
–Strong organizational skills and attention to detail
–Ability to work independently and in a team environment
–Excellent oral and written communication skills
–Qualifications and willingness to apply for the WNDB Internship Grant Program
–Proficiency with the Chicago Manual of Style 17th edition is preferred
–Experience or education in line editing, proofreading, and/or copyediting is preferred

The internship has a hybrid schedule, with a mix of remote work and working onsite in our Mendota Heights office, 20 hours a week during office hours the months of June–August 2024, exact schedule TBD. Applicants local to the Minneapolis-St. Paul area are strongly preferred. Compensation is $12.50/hour, payable semi-monthly as a stipend.
